Luke 2:4-7
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,
5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
6 And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth.
7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
Today is Monday, the 18th of December, and the last Monday in this year's Advent season. Today, I'm celebrating three of my Grandchildren all born on this same day, in the same year. All three of them: Leo, Raewyn and Theo turn 8 years old today!
Raewyn and Theo are twins and my daughter gave birth to them in England. Leo is my Son and daughter in law's child and he was born in Wisconsin. I think about that day 8 years ago and it the thought hits me that it was the miracle of the telephone that made it possible for us to be connected to our children to hear the news that day.
Not so with Joseph and Mary. Removed from their home in Nazareth, they had traveled some 90 miles to get to Bethlehem. They ended up at an inn, an inn where there was no room for them. They were given the manger - the cattle stall - to have their child.
Alone, without family, without anything to connect to other than each other...
Alone, with creatures surrounding, and nothing but a feeding trough to lay their new born baby...
Alone, but not alone...for there God was with them.
There God watched as God's Son was born - a human that was also deity - wrapped in cloths to keep him warm...
Angels aware...watching....the miracle of birth that some of us have had the great privilege of watching happens in front of them.
It is the miracle of birth...the most amazing miracle God ever gave to us. Happy Birthday Raewyn, Theo, Leo...and happy birthday Jesus.
Peace
