Luke 2:1-4 1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the
world should be registered.
2 This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria.
3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town.
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,
Most of us know the famous poem: "Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house."
This passage is the before Christmas time. It's interesting how Luke makes things so clear in terms of history and geography.
Names: Caesar Augustus, Quirinius, Joseph, David
Geography: Syria, Galilee, Nazareth, Bethlehem...
On the night before Christmas there was quiet movements of people towards the place God was going to choose to enter the world of humanity as a child.
Bethlehem - the House of Bread! That's what the name means, "the house of bread".
In the Old Testament were introduced to Bethlehem as the place Jacob buries his wife Rachel.
In the book of Ruth, Ruth, a Moabite woman meets her husband-to-be, Boaz in Bethlehem. They were married there and she joined the ancestral line that would lead to King David and onward to Jesus.
David is a shepherd on a hillside outside of Bethlehem when the prophet Samuel calls him to his knees and pouring oil over his head, anoints him to be King of Israel.
Centuries later the prophet Micah proclaims that God was going to do something spectacular from Bethlehem -
Micah 5:2
But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.
