A Cosmic Christmas

Most of what we read concerning the Christmas story is recorded in Old Testament Prophecy and New Testament's Matthew and Luke.  Beyond that there's little references to the birth of Jesus in scripture - Except, the narrative in Revelation.

This is a view of the first Advent written from the viewpoint of the heavenlies, and it isn't soft and sweet with angelic chorus', etc...it's full of imagery that is tense like a suspense thriller.  This is a reading of the Christmas story you may have never read before...but it's worth our reading because it reminds us that God sending His Son into the world was not just a sweet thing to do, but was a declaration of war on Satan's domain.

Revelation 12:1-17
1  And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.
2  She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth.
3  And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven diadems.
4  His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might devour it.
5  She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne,
6  and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which she is to be nourished for 1,260 days.
7
Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back,
8  but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.
9  And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
10  And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.
11  And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.
12  Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”

13  And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.
14  But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle so that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time.
15  The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with a flood.
16  But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth.
17  Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. And he stood on the sand of the sea.

Here's a vision of Christmas that is amazing...

  • A woman clothed with the sun.
  • A birth that stirs a dragon to attack the mother and child
  • War begins in the heavens with Michael and his Angels fighting against the dragon and his angels.
  • Satan is defeated and the declaration is made...
“Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.

Biblically, theologically, we call this Spiritual Warfare.

"The World in solemn stillness lay...?"

Advent reminds us that two parallel things are happening - one on earth, and one in the heavenlies.

In Advent God has invaded the earth with his Son leading the way, and His Kingdom planted on the earth.
Jesus' birth is surrounded with awe...a virgin, a husband who does the right thing because God speaks to him, an innkeeper, a manger, angels and shepherds...

But it's the beginning of a war.  It's a reminder to us that God is going to redeem the earth - it's important to Him.

"The Hopes and Fears of all the years,
are met in thee tonight."

Peace

Hands Full of Parcels

"A Man whose hands are full of parcels can't receive a gift."   - C. S. Lewis Romans 4:13-16 (ESV) 13  For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14  For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15  For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression. 16  That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all... The last four days have been best described by the word "fatigue".  It's not an uncommon word in our vocabulary.  Listless, tired, sore.  1300 miles of car travel, being sick, not sleeping well, and eating poorly all add up to the word - fatigue.   Someone onc...

The Tabernacle

The readings today are Exodus 36, 37, 38 I wanted to post some pictures of what these various parts of the Tabernacle looked like. It's not the easiest read in the world, but if you persevere through it, you can get a picture of all the different pieces that made up the tabernacle. It is a replica of the various parts of the Tabernacle in the Wilderness: First thing in the chapter listed is the outside of the tabernacle which consisted of curtains tied together and put on cross bars through loops. Next at the beginning of 37 is the table and lampstand: Also, the altar of incense: And, the altar for the burnt offering which was in the courtyard: Finally, the courtyard which made it all come together: Hope that helps with what it might have all looked like. Most importantly, this was their "place" of worship they were building. I hope you have a great day of worship. - Posted using BlogPress from my iPad

The difference between defending and explaining

The news of recent has focused the suffering of Christians in the middle east who have been martyred for their faith in Christ at the hands of Islamic Terrorists. Through the centuries many Christians have lost their lives as a result of their faith. For us, who live in America, there is little chance that we would have this happen here - but it's entirely possibly that terrorism will strike out at Christians sometime.  But, for many Christians in the western world - especially here in the U.S. - being a Christians who believes God's word there is a form of persecution that is defined by words like "ostracized", "passed over", "ridiculed", and more. What do we do in the face of opposition to faith? When the Apostle Peter writes to the early believers who are undergoing great pressure, even persecution for their faith in Jesus, he gives them this charge. 1 Peter 3:8-18 8  Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly lov...
