Judgments and Rewards, Part 3

Uughh...I'm getting terrible at remembering to finish these in a timely way...So sorry, please forgive.

I did this teaching on Judgments and Rewards and if you haven't read the two previous blogs you should see those first.  This is Part 3, and the final part of this teaching.  The last blog dealt with the first of the Crowns listed as belonging to believers.  There's a couple of more in scripture:

1.   The Crown of Life:

James 1:12 (ESV)
12  Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

The crown of life is awarded to all believers who sustain their spiritual growth in this life under pressure where growth of their faith is tested and refined in various trials.

1 Peter 1:6-9 (ESV)
6  In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,
7  so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

By maintaining our faith in times of trouble, we show the world that we love Jesus Christ more than the world.

Revelation 2:8-11 (ESV)
8  “And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: ‘The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life.
9  “‘I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) ...
10  Do not fear what you are about to suffer... Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
11  He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.’

2.   The Crown of Glory:

The crown of glory corresponds to the virtue of love and is awarded to all believers who faithfully and properly fulfill the ministries assigned to them in life, but I love that in this section of scripture what Peter says.

1 Peter 5:1-4 (ESV)
1  So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed:
2  shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly;
3  not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.
4  And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

Rewards are not the focus…service is.

Sen. Herb Kohl just recently sold the Bucks for several hundred Million dollars.  He sent out to every employee of the Bucks, from Ticket sellers, to those who swept the arena seats, to janitors, sellers in the food stands, to office people, a letter of thanks and a $500 check.  Now, it’s not a lot of money from the standpoint of what he got for the sale of the team, but it was a gesture of thanks for what they had done in serving the organization and not just the paycheck.

We gain reward for Love, based on Motives and Attitude…doing things in the right way for the right reason.

Philippians 3:8-14 (ESV)
8  Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
9  and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—
10  that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,
11  that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
12  Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.
13  Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,
14  I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Lastly, remember this also -  there also was once a Crown of Thorns:

We should remember that Jesus lived a life of perfect service, service to the point that He died on behalf of us all, and yet He was rewarded in this life by an ungrateful world with a crown of thorns even though He is was and still is, The rightful King.

What do we do with all of this teaching on Rewards?  How do we maintain a posture of loving obedience that is not motivated by anything other than love for Christ?

1 Corinthians 13:13 (ESV)
13  So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

The end of Christian love (which faith and hope support) is serving Christ’s Kingdom:

Galatians 6:9 (ESV)
9  And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

Whatever the task God has given us here on earth, we persevere knowing that this labor is not in vain in Jesus Christ our Lord.

This is how the Bible ends…when the story is complete:

Revelation 22:12 (NIV)
12  "Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done.

Hands Full of Parcels

"A Man whose hands are full of parcels can't receive a gift."   - C. S. Lewis Romans 4:13-16 (ESV) 13  For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14  For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15  For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression. 16  That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all... The last four days have been best described by the word "fatigue".  It's not an uncommon word in our vocabulary.  Listless, tired, sore.  1300 miles of car travel, being sick, not sleeping well, and eating poorly all add up to the word - fatigue.   Someone onc...

The Tabernacle

The readings today are Exodus 36, 37, 38 I wanted to post some pictures of what these various parts of the Tabernacle looked like. It's not the easiest read in the world, but if you persevere through it, you can get a picture of all the different pieces that made up the tabernacle. It is a replica of the various parts of the Tabernacle in the Wilderness: First thing in the chapter listed is the outside of the tabernacle which consisted of curtains tied together and put on cross bars through loops. Next at the beginning of 37 is the table and lampstand: Also, the altar of incense: And, the altar for the burnt offering which was in the courtyard: Finally, the courtyard which made it all come together: Hope that helps with what it might have all looked like. Most importantly, this was their "place" of worship they were building. I hope you have a great day of worship. - Posted using BlogPress from my iPad

The difference between defending and explaining

The news of recent has focused the suffering of Christians in the middle east who have been martyred for their faith in Christ at the hands of Islamic Terrorists. Through the centuries many Christians have lost their lives as a result of their faith. For us, who live in America, there is little chance that we would have this happen here - but it's entirely possibly that terrorism will strike out at Christians sometime.  But, for many Christians in the western world - especially here in the U.S. - being a Christians who believes God's word there is a form of persecution that is defined by words like "ostracized", "passed over", "ridiculed", and more. What do we do in the face of opposition to faith? When the Apostle Peter writes to the early believers who are undergoing great pressure, even persecution for their faith in Jesus, he gives them this charge. 1 Peter 3:8-18 8  Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly lov...
